‘Venom: The Last Dance’ Set for Early Release in China Before U.S. Premiere

Columbia Pictures’ highly anticipated “Venom: The Last Dance” is set to hit Chinese theaters on October 23, 2024, just two days before its North American debut. This move positions China as one of the key markets in the film’s global release strategy, underscoring the significance of the region in the success of major Hollywood blockbusters.

While China imposes strict regulations on foreign films, including censorship and import controls, recent years have seen fewer obstacles for major Hollywood titles. Foreign films, especially high-profile releases, are often managed by state-owned distributors and may undergo edits to ensure they meet the country’s “all ages” viewing standard.

Despite these regulatory hurdles, China remains a lucrative market for Hollywood. For instance, “Alien: Romulus,” which enjoyed a simultaneous release in China and other global markets, raked in an impressive $101 million at the Chinese box office—surpassing its earnings in North America.

Venom’s Box Office History in China

The “Venom” franchise already has a strong track record in China. The first film, released in 2018, earned a staggering $262 million in the region, eclipsing its $212 million North American gross. China’s contribution represented a significant portion of the film’s global box office performance, cementing the country as a critical audience for the franchise.

However, the sequel, “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” in 2021, missed out on a Chinese release due to the ongoing COVID restrictions at the time. Whether this gap will impact the reception of “Venom: The Last Dance” in China remains to be seen, but the franchise’s historical popularity suggests a strong potential for success.

Missing Tencent’s Backing

One notable difference with “Venom: The Last Dance” is the absence of Tencent Pictures as an investor and co-producer, unlike the first film. Tencent’s involvement in the original release provided an additional boost, given its dominance in China’s social media, streaming, and gaming markets. While this could affect promotional reach, “Venom” already boasts a solid fanbase in the region.

The Final Chapter

In “Venom: The Last Dance,” Tom Hardy reprises his role as Eddie Brock, aka Venom, in what promises to be the final chapter of the trilogy. According to an official synopsis from Columbia Pictures, Eddie and Venom find themselves cornered, pursued by forces from both of their worlds. With their backs against the wall, the duo must make a game-changing decision that will bring their story to a close.

Joining Hardy is a stellar cast, including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Peggy Lu, and Stephen Graham. The film is directed by Kelly Marcel, who also penned the screenplay alongside Hardy, based on a story they developed together. Marcel, Hardy, and Avi Arad are among the film’s producers, with Joe Caracciolo Jr. serving as executive producer.

As “Venom: The Last Dance” prepares to bow in China, all eyes will be on how the film performs in this crucial market, especially given the franchise’s earlier successes and the challenges posed by its interrupted sequel release. Whether fans’ anticipation remains strong or has waned over time will soon be clear as the final chapter unfolds on the global stage.
