The Golden State Warriors are already bracing for a new era this season, with long-time guard Klay Thompson heading to the Dallas Mavericks after an 11-year tenure. However, the Warriors might be setting their sights on an even bigger move that could reshape their roster.
According to Sam Amick from The Athletic, the Warriors have explored the possibility of acquiring Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler. Speaking on The TK Show with veteran sportswriter Tim Kawakami, Amick revealed that Golden State has shown interest in the All-Star.
“You need things to fall apart a bit for it to happen—not in free agency, but in the trade market,” Amick said. “Jimmy Butler comes to mind. He’s entering the final year of his contract with Miami, and while no extension was reached, the Warriors have had their eye on him. There were likely some conversations over the summer.”
Butler is set to earn $48.8 million this season as part of his current deal, with a $52.4 million player option looming for 2026. The uncertainty surrounding his future with the Heat has sparked speculation about whether the team might consider trading him before the contract expires.
For Golden State, the interest in Butler signals an ambition to reload their roster following a tough 46–36 season that ended without a playoff appearance. The Warriors are looking to bounce back from one of their best non-playoff seasons by win percentage in franchise history. Meanwhile, Miami had its own share of disappointment, falling in the first round of the playoffs just a year after making a surprise run to the NBA Finals.
At 34, Butler remains a top-tier talent, known for his defensive grit and ability to perform in clutch moments. For the Warriors, adding a player of his caliber could bolster their chances of returning to title contention—particularly as they manage the transition away from the core dynasty years of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and the now-departed Thompson.
Whether the Heat would be willing to part with Butler remains to be seen, especially given his significance to Miami’s success. But as trade rumors swirl and his contract nears its end, it’s clear the Warriors are keeping a close eye on the situation.
