Blackpink’s Jennie Embarks on Solo Journey with Columbia Records Deal

Jennie Kim, globally known as a member of Blackpink, has officially signed a solo deal with Columbia Records, marking a significant milestone in her career. Partnering with her label, Oddatelier, Jennie is set to release her new solo single this October, solidifying her status as a multifaceted artist.

Rising to fame in 2016 as part of Blackpink, Jennie has been a driving force behind the group’s record-breaking success. Blackpink became the highest-charting female Korean act on the Billboard charts and made history as the first Korean artist to headline Coachella. Beyond her group work, Jennie has already started carving her solo path. In 2022, she collaborated with The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp on the track “One of the Girls” and appeared alongside them in HBO’s provocative series, The Idol.

Jennie’s global appeal is rooted in her international upbringing. Born in South Korea, she spent five years in Auckland, New Zealand, before returning home to join YG Entertainment’s prestigious talent academy. Since then, Blackpink has skyrocketed to global stardom, becoming the first Korean female act with five YouTube videos surpassing one billion views and amassing a massive following on Spotify.

In The Idol, a series created by Sam Levinson, Jennie took on the role of a backup dancer and singer named Jennie Ruby Jane, who dreams of stepping into the spotlight alongside Lily-Rose Depp’s character, a rising pop star.

Speaking with Dua Lipa on her BBC Sounds podcast Dua Lipa: At Your Service, Jennie reflected on her venture into acting. “Acting was something I always wanted to explore, but I knew I had to approach it the right way. I wanted it to feel authentic, not like I was chasing just any opportunity,” Jennie shared. “Meeting Sam Levinson and discussing the role with him in LA last year really touched me and helped me understand the character he envisioned for me.”

With a solo music career on the horizon and a budding acting resume, Jennie Kim is taking bold steps in defining her own path, outside of Blackpink’s iconic legacy. Fans and industry insiders alike are eagerly awaiting what comes next from this versatile star.
